About

Shiwei Du is pioneering the next generation of minimally invasive surgical robotics, with a focus on magnetically controlled systems for vascular interventions. His research centers on developing intelligent guidewire robots that can autonomously navigate the complex, tortuous pathways of the human vasculature. Du's major contributions include the design of a magnetically controlled guidewire robot system with both steering and propulsion capabilities, which significantly enhances controllability in hard-to-reach vessels while reducing physician radiation exposure. His most cited work (88 citations) introduces a double-loop stable control method for automatic guidewire steering, a breakthrough in achieving agile, autonomous navigation. Beyond guidewires, Du has innovated in soft robotics with a soft-hard magnetic transformable coaxial fiber that enables multimodal deformations, and a dual-responsive shape-programmable robot for adaptive aneurysm embolization—a novel approach to treating this life-threatening condition. With over 100 total citations and multiple high-impact publications in 2023-2024, Du is establishing himself as a rising leader in magnetic surgical robotics, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in endovascular intervention.
