About

Seoin Yang is a rising leader in the emerging field of nanobiohybrids, where synthetic materials are integrated with living cells to create “bioaugmented” systems with unprecedented capabilities. Her research focuses on engineering the cellular interface—specifically through the construction of artificial organelles and catalytic coatings—to control and direct cell behavior. In a landmark 2024 study, Yang introduced a biocompatible method for building multilayered, liposome-based extracellular artificial organelles directly onto individual living cells, a breakthrough that has already garnered 12 citations and promises to revolutionize cell therapy, biocatalysis, and cell robotics. Prior to this, her 2023 work achieved a first in the field: chemically controlling the chemotactic movement of Jurkat T cells using glucose gradients, a phenomenon she terms “fugetaxis.” This demonstration of steering cell directionality (6 citations) opens new doors for cytotherapeutics and cellular sensors. By merging chemistry with cell biology, Yang is not just augmenting cells—she is redefining what a cell can be, laying the groundwork for next-generation smart therapeutics and cellular machines.
