About
Roger Fulton is a biomedical imaging researcher whose work has fundamentally advanced the field of motion-compensated neuroimaging, with a particular focus on positron emission tomography (PET) in both preclinical and clinical settings. His most significant contributions center on enabling PET imaging of awake, freely moving animals — a breakthrough that eliminates the confounding effects of anesthesia in studies of debilitating brain disorders such as dementia, depression, and schizophrenia. His landmark 2014 paper on markerless motion tracking of awake animals (49 citations) demonstrated that noninvasive functional imaging could be performed on unrestrained subjects, allowing behavioral responses and neuroimaging data to be captured simultaneously. Building on this, his 2018 open-field PET work (33 citations) pushed the boundaries further by integrating behavioral measurement directly into the imaging environment.
