Dr. Mark J. Cunningham is a pioneering urologic and cardiothoracic surgeon whose work has redefined the surgical management of renal cell carcinoma with complex venous involvement. His primary research focuses on the development and refinement of minimally invasive and robotic techniques for treating renal cancers with inferior vena cava (IVC) tumor thrombi, particularly the most challenging Level III and Level IV extensions. Dr. Cunningham’s most significant contribution is the first reported series of completely intracorporeal robotic Level III IVC tumor thrombectomy, a landmark paper with 142 citations that demonstrated the feasibility of this complex procedure without open surgery. He further advanced the field by successfully performing a robotic removal of an extensive Level IV intracardiac tumor thrombus, a feat previously considered impossible via a minimally invasive approach.
