About

Cancer, in the context of robotics and AI research, refers to a broad category of malignant diseases characterized by uncontrolled cell growth, which has become a primary clinical domain driving surgical robotics innovation and intelligent medical systems. Robotic platforms — most prominently the da Vinci Surgical System — were significantly advanced through oncological applications, enabling surgeons to perform complex cancer resections with greater precision, reduced blood loss, and faster patient recovery compared to open surgery. Procedures such as radical prostatectomy, cystectomy, hysterectomy, and esophagectomy have been extensively studied to validate robotic approaches against conventional laparoscopic and open techniques. In AI, cancer drives development of diagnostic algorithms, image-guided intervention systems, and treatment planning tools. The clinical stakes of oncological surgery — where margins, nerve preservation, and lymph node dissection directly affect survival and quality of life — make it an ideal benchmark for evaluating robotic dexterity, autonomy, and decision support. Cancer research thus serves as a critical proving ground for surgical robotics, establishing evidence-based standards that inform broader deployment of intelligent surgical systems across medicine.
