Masaaki Takeuchi has pioneered the intersection of robotics and music, dedicating his career to understanding human motor control through the development of anthropomorphic musical performance robots. His key research areas include biologically-inspired robotics, human-robot interaction, and the mechanical design of simulated human organs for musical expression. Takeuchi’s most significant contributions center on the Waseda Flutist Robot (WF-4RIV) and the Waseda Saxophonist Robot (WAS-1), which replicate the complex physiological mechanisms of human musicians—including embouchure, breath control, and finger dexterity. His work on WAS-1, detailed in a 2010 paper with 19 citations, introduced air pressure feedback control to achieve more natural sound production.
