About
Kim Baraka is a roboticist and human-robot interaction (HRI) researcher whose work spans robot expressivity, social robotics, and assistive technology. Perhaps most recognized for pioneering research into how mobile robots communicate their internal states to surrounding humans, Baraka's series of studies on expressive lighting systems — accumulating over 300 citations collectively — demonstrated that animated lights offer an effective, distance-visible mechanism for conveying hidden robot states, laying important groundwork for safer and more intuitive human-robot coexistence in everyday environments. His 2020 extended framework for characterizing social robots (88 citations) has become a valuable conceptual tool for researchers designing and evaluating socially capable systems.
