A service robot is an autonomous or semi-autonomous robotic system designed to perform useful tasks for humans in non-industrial settings, ranging from physical platforms that navigate real environments to AI-driven virtual agents such as chatbots. Unlike industrial robots that operate in controlled manufacturing environments, service robots interact directly with people in contexts such as hotels, restaurants, retail spaces, healthcare facilities, and homes. They leverage capabilities including human detection and tracking, natural language processing, facial expression recognition, and social navigation to deliver assistance, information, or care. In robotics and AI, service robots represent a convergence of perception, decision-making, and human-robot interaction research, requiring systems that are both technically capable and socially acceptable. Their significance lies in their potential to enhance service quality, reduce operational costs, and extend coverage in labor-constrained sectors. Understanding how people perceive, trust, and accept service robots—including responses to failure, anthropomorphism, and robot gender—is equally critical to their successful deployment as the underlying engineering.
