About
James G. Bellingham is a pioneering figure in marine and extreme-environment robotics, whose work has fundamentally advanced our ability to explore the world’s most inaccessible frontiers. His research centers on autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), coordinated multi-robot systems, and the development of robots capable of operating in remote and hostile environments—from the deep ocean to outer space. Bellingham’s major contributions include pioneering coordinated AUV swarms for Lagrangian studies of microbial ecosystems in the deep chlorophyll maximum, a breakthrough enabling in situ observation of ecologically critical ocean layers (61 citations). He has also advanced robotic self-perception and fault detection, developing online topic models that allow AUVs to identify unanticipated failures autonomously (42 citations).
