About
Ines Rombach is a pioneering surgical oncologist whose research is reshaping the management of advanced prostate cancer. Her work sits at the critical intersection of surgical oncology and molecular imaging, focusing on two transformative areas: the role of radical prostatectomy in oligo-metastatic disease and the application of fluorescence-guided surgery. Rombach’s major contribution is the landmark TRoMbone trial (2021, 55 citations), the first prospective, randomised feasibility study to test whether radical prostatectomy plus pelvic lymphadenectomy can be safely added to standard-of-care systemic therapy in men with newly diagnosed oligo-metastatic prostate cancer. This work challenges the long-held dogma that surgery has no place in metastatic disease, opening a new frontier in multimodal treatment. Complementing this, Rombach led the first-in-human study (2024, 18 citations) of the PSMA-targeted minibody IR800-IAB2M for intraoperative fluorescence guidance during robotic radical prostatectomy. This breakthrough allows surgeons to visualise microscopic cancer deposits in real time, potentially reducing positive surgical margins and improving oncologic outcomes.
