About

Haruo Noma is a multidisciplinary researcher whose work spans tactile sensing, robotics, virtual reality, and human-computer interaction. His most significant contributions lie in the development of advanced tactile sensor technologies, particularly microcantilever-based arrays capable of detecting subtle mechanical phenomena. His 2012 paper on tactile sensor arrays employing nickel–chromium alloy thin films with low temperature coefficient of resistance — a breakthrough for reliable slippage detection — has garnered 86 citations, establishing it as a landmark contribution to the field of MEMS-based sensing. Building on this foundation, Noma has pioneered sensors capable of simultaneously measuring normal and shear forces, addressing a critical need in dexterous robotic manipulation and tele-existence systems. Beyond hardware, Noma has explored the broader ecosystem of human-robot and human-virtual-environment interaction, contributing early work on haptic and visual feedback for virtual object manipulation and designing robots as communication media. His GestureMan 2 project examined how body and head movement influence social presence in remote communication. Collectively, his research reflects a sustained commitment to bridging physical sensing and immersive human interaction, making his work highly relevant to robotics engineers, VR developers, and researchers in embodied cognition alike.
