About
Geoff Sims is an Antarctic astronomer whose work has been pivotal in identifying and characterizing the best sites on Earth for ground-based astronomy. His research focuses on optical sky brightness and atmospheric conditions at the highest, driest, and coldest locations on the Antarctic plateau. Sims led the "Nigel experiment" at Dome A, using a custom fiber-fed spectrograph to measure sky brightness from 300–850 nm, providing crucial data for future telescope siting. He also contributed to the identification and modeling of Ridge A, recognized as the site with the lowest precipitable water vapor and best terahertz transmission on Earth—a discovery that has shaped plans for submillimeter and THz observatories. Additionally, Sims was instrumental in developing PLATO-R, an autonomous robotic observatory capable of providing heat, power, and communications for year-round experiments anywhere on the plateau. His work, though modest in citation counts, has had outsized impact on the logistical and scientific foundation for Antarctic astronomy, enabling some of the most ambitious ground-based observatory projects ever conceived.
