Jon R. Everett is a pioneering astronomical instrumentation researcher whose career has been defined by his groundbreaking work in Antarctic observatory development and site characterization. His most significant contributions center on establishing the Antarctic plateau — particularly Dome A, the continent's highest point — as an exceptional site for astronomical observation, where the sky is shown to be more than an order of magnitude darker in the near infrared than temperate latitude observatories. Everett's most influential work involves the design, deployment, and operation of PLATO (PLATeau Observatory), a remarkable fully-robotic, self-contained observatory capable of generating its own electricity, heat, and satellite communications in one of Earth's most extreme environments, withstanding outside temperatures as low as -70°C. First deployed in January 2008 by a Chinese expedition team, PLATO accumulated over 730 days of continuous uptime, demonstrating the viability of autonomous astronomical research in Antarctica.
