Eva Haglind is a Swedish surgical oncologist whose research has profoundly shaped the evidence base for prostate cancer surgery, with a particular focus on comparing robotic and open approaches to radical prostatectomy. She is best known as a principal architect of the LAPPRO trial — a landmark prospective, multicentre study enrolling thousands of patients across Sweden to rigorously evaluate robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RALP) against the traditional open retropubic approach. At a time when robotic surgery was being rapidly adopted worldwide with limited high-quality evidence, Haglind's work provided much-needed scientific scrutiny. Her most cited publication (489 citations) demonstrated nuanced differences in urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction between surgical techniques, while subsequent follow-up studies at 24 months and eight years extended these insights into long-term oncological and functional outcomes.
