About
David C. Jangraw is a leading researcher at the intersection of cognitive neuroscience and human-machine interaction, with key contributions to brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and perceptual decision-making. His pioneering work on "cortically coupled computing" introduced a paradigm shift in BCI design, where systems opportunistically sense a user's implicit brain states to enhance synergistic human-machine interaction—a concept detailed in his 2016 paper (19 citations). This approach moves beyond direct control to capture users' natural cognitive computations, opening new avenues for assistive technologies and augmented cognition. Jangraw's research also advances our understanding of neural mechanisms underlying decision-making. In a highly cited 2020 study (11 citations), he used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to causally test a network model of perceptual decision-making, revealing the lateral occipital cortex's role in information accumulation. This work bridges human imaging and causal manipulation, providing critical insights into how the brain transforms sensory evidence into choices. With a growing citation impact and a focus on translating neural signals into practical applications, Jangraw's research continues to shape both fundamental neuroscience and next-generation human-computer interfaces.
