Bryan Willimon is a roboticist whose research lies at the intersection of perception, manipulation, and autonomous systems. His most influential work focuses on interactive perception—a paradigm where robots use physical actions to actively gather sensory data. In his highly cited 2011 paper “Classification of clothing using interactive perception” (89 citations), Willimon pioneered a system enabling a robot to autonomously extract and classify individual garments from a pile of laundry using only visual sensors. This work was extended in his 2011 paper on “Model for unfolding laundry using interactive perception” (59 citations), where he developed algorithms for robots to systematically flatten and orient pieces of cloth.
