About
Athanasios Didangelos is a leading vascular biologist whose work has fundamentally advanced our understanding of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in cardiovascular disease. His research focuses on the proteomic and lipidomic characterization of vascular tissues, particularly the aorta and atherosclerotic plaques. Didangelos pioneered the use of high-resolution mass spectrometry to map the ECM composition of human arteries, revealing how pathological remodeling drives conditions like abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) and atherosclerosis. His landmark 2010 study on the proteomics of the human aortic extracellular space (290 citations) provided the first comprehensive inventory of ECM components in the vessel wall. This was followed by his seminal 2011 work on ECM remodeling in AAA (286 citations), which identified novel matrix proteins beyond the well-known elastin and collagen degradation.
