About
Dr. Akihiro Hirakawa is a leading Japanese surgical oncologist whose research centers on advancing minimally invasive techniques for pelvic and colorectal cancers, with a particular focus on robotic surgery. His major contributions include demonstrating the safety and efficacy of robotic pelvic exenteration through a landmark multicenter propensity-matched analysis in Japan, which compared robotic, laparoscopic, and open approaches for pelvic cancer—a study that has already garnered 13 citations since its 2024 publication. Dr. Hirakawa is also pioneering the investigation of intracorporeal versus extracorporeal anastomosis in stage II/III colorectal cancer through the INEX study, a multicenter randomized controlled trial (2025) that aims to clarify long-term oncologic outcomes and recovery benefits. This work addresses critical questions about the optimal surgical approach in the era of robot-assisted surgery. With his focus on improving postoperative recovery and oncologic prognosis, Dr. Hirakawa’s research is shaping the future of colorectal and pelvic cancer surgery, offering evidence that directly impacts clinical practice and patient outcomes.
