About
Alan M. Watson is an observational astronomer and instrumentation leader whose work has fundamentally advanced the robotic follow-up of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and other transient phenomena. His research centers on the design, construction, and automation of wide-field optical and near-infrared imagers for rapid-response telescopes. Watson’s most impactful contribution is the automation of the 1.5-meter Harold Johnson telescope in Mexico for the RATIR camera (50 citations), enabling robotic, multi-band observations of GRB afterglows. He has since led the development of DDOTI, a wide-field robotic imager for transient detection, and is a key architect of COLIBRI, a 1.3-meter robotic telescope dedicated to the transient sky. Watson is also the principal investigator for CAGIRE, a near-infrared camera designed to detect high-redshift GRB afterglows in support of the SVOM mission. His work on COATLI, a diffraction-limited all-sky imager, further demonstrates his commitment to pushing the limits of robotic observing. With over a decade of publications detailing systems design, control software, and optical performance, Watson’s instruments have enabled critical time-domain science, placing him at the forefront of transient astronomy in the era of multi-messenger astrophysics.
