Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that overlays digital information — such as 3D models, annotations, or interactive graphics — onto a user's view of the physical world in real time, typically through cameras, headsets, or mobile displays. In robotics and AI, AR serves as a critical interface layer connecting humans and autonomous systems: it visualizes robot motion intent, highlights safe collaboration zones, and superimposes task guidance during assembly or surgical procedures. Underlying AR systems rely on techniques like fiducial marker detection, visual odometry, and SLAM to accurately register virtual content onto real-world coordinates. This spatial alignment enables applications ranging from robot-assisted surgery — where CT scan data is overlaid onto live video — to industrial human-robot collaboration, where workers receive real-time safety alerts and workflow instructions. AR matters because it dramatically reduces the cognitive burden on human operators, improves transparency of robot behavior, and accelerates training and deployment in complex environments, making human-machine teaming safer and more intuitive across manufacturing, healthcare, and beyond.
