About
Yi Shen is a prominent thoracic surgeon whose research focuses on minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgical techniques for thoracic malignancies, including lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and thymic disease. Working at the forefront of surgical innovation in China, Shen has made significant contributions to evaluating and advancing robotic surgery platforms, particularly the da Vinci system, in thoracic oncology. His most-cited work, a 2019 propensity score–weighted comparison of robotic sleeve lobectomy against thoracoscopic and open approaches for centrally located non–small cell lung cancer (84 citations), helped establish the clinical viability of this technically demanding robotic procedure. His early investigation into da Vinci robot-assisted thymectomy across 55 Chinese patients (45 citations) was among the pioneering reports on this technique within China, helping to shape its adoption nationally. Shen has also rigorously examined robotic esophagectomy, contributing both comparative studies and systematic meta-analyses (totaling over 56 citations) that critically assess whether robot-assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy truly outperforms conventional video-assisted approaches in lymph node dissection and short-term outcomes. Collectively, his body of work has meaningfully informed surgical decision-making and helped define best practices in robotic thoracic surgery across China and beyond.
