About

Sytze de Bruin is a leading researcher in agricultural robotics and automation, with a primary focus on coverage path planning (CPP) for unmanned agricultural vehicles. His major contribution is the development of Fields2Cover, an open-source library that unifies diverse CPP algorithms into a single, accessible framework—a critical step toward standardizing and benchmarking path planning in agriculture. This work, detailed in a 2023 paper with 70 citations, provides researchers and practitioners with tools to compare and reproduce CPP methods, addressing a long-standing gap in the field. De Bruin has also advanced headland coverage planning, introducing continuous curvature path planning to enable safe, efficient turning at field boundaries—a complex problem often overlooked in agricultural robotics. More recently, he has extended his efforts with Fields2Benchmark (2025), an open-source benchmark for evaluating CPP methods, further promoting reproducibility and generalizability. Through these contributions, de Bruin has not only advanced the theoretical foundations of agricultural path planning but also provided practical, community-driven tools that accelerate innovation in autonomous farming systems.
