Sumio Watanabe is a pioneering figure in the intersection of robotics, acoustics, and neural computation. His early and influential work focused on developing ultrasonic sensing systems for robotic vision, most notably his 1990 paper on "Ultrasonic robot eyes using neural networks" (33 citations) and its 1991 follow-up (16 citations).
