About
Reza Moini is pioneering the next generation of high-performance construction materials by merging bio-inspired design with robotic additive manufacturing. His research focuses on developing architected concretes—materials whose internal geometry, rather than just composition, governs mechanical behavior. Moini’s most impactful contribution is the creation of tough, double-bouligand architected concrete, a damage-tolerant structure inspired by the coelacanth fish scale. This work, published in *Nature* (2024, 45 citations), demonstrates how helically arranged fibrils can dramatically enhance toughness. He has also systematically investigated sinusoidally architected concrete (20 citations), showing how curvature can improve mechanical performance over monolithic castings. Beyond design, Moini addresses critical manufacturing challenges, developing pressure-based closed-loop feedback control (2025, 5 citations) to ensure geometric fidelity during extrusion—a key step toward reliable, large-scale robotic construction. His achievements include pioneering two-component robotic additive manufacturing for interlocking bodies, enabling complex, multi-material structures. With a rapidly growing citation record and foundational work in both material architecture and process control, Moini is shaping the future of sustainable, high-performance infrastructure.
