About

Luke Wood is a pioneering researcher in the field of assistive robotics, with a particular focus on developing and evaluating humanoid robot technologies to support children with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). His work centers on the KASPAR robot — a child-sized humanoid platform he has helped iteratively refine over more than two decades — exploring how robotic interaction can meaningfully improve social, communicative, and cognitive outcomes for autistic children. Among his most significant contributions is the development of novel methodologies targeting Visual Perspective Taking (VPT) and Theory of Mind skills, capabilities that children with autism frequently find challenging. Wood has also broken new ground by introducing robot-mediated interviewing as a therapeutic and research tool, demonstrating that children — including those with special needs — respond distinctively and often more openly to robotic interviewers than to human ones. His research has been validated across different cultural contexts, including school environments in Greece, broadening the global applicability of his findings. With his most-cited paper accumulating 148 citations and a combined body of work exceeding 430 citations, Wood's research has had substantial influence on the fields of human-robot interaction, special education, and assistive technology.
