About
Cheol Song is a pioneering figure in the field of microsurgical robotics, with a primary focus on developing “smart” handheld tools that actively cancel physiological hand tremor. His major contributions center on integrating fiber-optic common-path optical coherence tomography (CP-OCT) sensors into microsurgical instruments—such as vitreoretinal tools, micro-forceps, and micro-scissors—enabling real-time, micron-scale distance sensing and motion compensation. This work directly addresses the critical challenge of unintended hand movements (50–100 microns) that can compromise delicate procedures. Song’s most cited paper, “Active tremor cancellation by a ‘Smart’ handheld vitreoretinal microsurgical tool using swept source optical coherence tomography” (2012, 87 citations), established the foundation for his sensor-guided robotic surgery paradigm. His 2013 paper on SMART micro-forceps (70 citations) further demonstrated the clinical potential of this approach. More recently, Song has expanded into human-robot interaction using mixed reality and gaze-speech systems, as well as robot-assisted optical coherence elastography for surgical palpation. His work on a three-dimensional compliant bowtie-shaped mechanical amplifier (2024) showcases his continued innovation in precision mechanisms. With over 180 cumulative citations, Song’s research is shaping the next generation of tremor-canceling, sensor-integrated microsurgical tools.
