About

Andrzej Nycz is a leading researcher in large-scale metal additive manufacturing, with a primary focus on Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) and its industrial scalability. His work addresses the critical challenge of fabricating large, complex metal components—such as stamping dies and molds for composite manufacturing—using high-deposition-rate processes that exceed 7 kg/h. Nycz’s major contributions include establishing foundational design rules for Metal Big Area Additive Manufacturing (MBAM) and pioneering multi-robot systems to overcome the size and geometric constraints of conventional single-robot setups. His research on mitigating mechanical property scatter in AISI 410 steel and optimizing shielding gas mixtures has advanced the reliability of arc-based processes. Notably, he contributed to the Additive Manufacturing Excavator (AME) project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a landmark demonstration of 3D-printed large-scale functional parts at CONEXPO 2017. With over 320 citations across his most-cited works, including a seminal 2019 paper on design rules (117 citations), Nycz’s work is pivotal for defense, automotive, and tooling applications, bridging the gap between additive research and real-world manufacturing.
