About

Welding is a manufacturing process that joins materials—typically metals—by applying heat, pressure, or both to fuse them at the molecular level. In robotics and AI, welding has become a critical application domain where automated systems replace or augment human welders to improve precision, consistency, safety, and throughput. Robotic welding systems employ techniques such as arc welding, laser welding, friction stir welding, and wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM), with robots executing pre-planned or adaptively generated torch paths across complex geometries. AI plays an increasingly central role through computer vision for real-time seam tracking and defect detection, neural networks for predicting bead geometry, and machine learning for optimizing process parameters like voltage, wire feed rate, and travel speed. Digital twins and intelligent sensing further enable closed-loop quality control and human-robot collaboration. Welding matters because it underpins manufacturing across aerospace, automotive, and construction industries, and advancing its automation directly reduces production costs, improves structural integrity, minimizes material waste, and enables novel capabilities like printing large metal structures layer by layer through additive manufacturing.
