About

Metallurgy is the science and engineering discipline concerned with the properties, processing, and applications of metals and metal alloys. It encompasses understanding how metals behave mechanically, thermally, and chemically, as well as how manufacturing techniques—such as welding, casting, forging, and additive manufacturing—affect their microstructure and performance. In robotics and AI, metallurgy plays a foundational role across several domains: wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) enables the fabrication of complex structural components for robotic systems; advanced welding processes, increasingly monitored by AI-driven defect detection, ensure joint integrity in robot frames and mechanisms; and emerging liquid metal alloys based on gallium enable stretchable conductors, soft actuators, and variable-stiffness structures central to soft robotics and wearable electronics. AI techniques such as deep learning and support vector machines are increasingly applied to monitor and optimize metallic manufacturing processes in real time. Metallurgy matters because the mechanical reliability, electrical conductivity, and adaptability of robotic hardware depend directly on material choices and processing quality, making it an indispensable foundation for building capable, durable, and innovative robotic systems.
