About

Akira Utsumi is a leading researcher in human-robot interaction, specializing in ambient gaze-tracking and non-invasive communication systems. His foundational work, "Remote gaze estimation with a single camera based on facial-feature tracking without special calibration actions" (2008, 129 citations), revolutionized the field by enabling real-time gaze estimation without requiring any special user calibration—a critical step toward natural, intuitive human-robot interfaces. Building on this, Utsumi developed the gaze-communicative stuffed-toy robot system (2007, 88 citations), which uses joint attention and eye contact to foster free and natural interaction, demonstrating how ambient gaze-tracking can create socially aware robots. His subsequent research on daily-partner robots (2009) and interactive guide plate systems (2013) further explored crossmodal awareness, integrating gaze and utterance detection to enable robots to respond appropriately to user behavior. More recently, Utsumi has advanced practical robotics with a multi-radio Wi-Fi system for teleoperated mobile robots (2023), ensuring stable communication in dynamic environments. With over 240 citations across his most influential works, Utsumi’s contributions have been instrumental in making robots more perceptive, communicative, and accessible, bridging the gap between technical gaze estimation and real-world, anthropomorphic interaction.
