Abstract
The use of robotic technology, particularly collaborative robots, or cobots, has made a profound impact on the evolution of transportation within smart cities. Leveraging the Internet of Things (IoT), these intelligent robots have revolutionized Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs). As cities grapple with growing populations and technological advances, robots and cobots have become increasingly essential. Connected devices have vastly expanded data collection in urban settings. Machine learning (ML) techniques are instrumental in harnessing this data flood, enhancing transportation system intelligence. However, road safety remains a paramount concern for societal well-being. The paradigm shift toward robots and cobots in smart mobility necessitates translating abundant quantitative data into insightful qualitative information. ML-powered applications imbue these technologies with intelligence, enabling them to tackle traffic management issues and enhance passenger safety. ITS encompasses various services and applications, including driverless cars, passenger information systems, and public transportation network management. These systems are integral to the blueprint for smart cities, fostering efficient transit, bolstered road safety, and reduced energy consumption and environmental impact. This study embarks on a comprehensive exploration of the dynamic interplay between robots, cobots, and smart transportation, highlighting their transformative potential. A variety of ML methods and IoT applications that support the synergy within ITS are explored in this chapter.
