Abstract

Miniaturization is an on-going effort in many industries, making smaller products that perform better and with more features compared with older generation products, which they subsequently replace. With this trend there is a need for new manufacturing technologies, and laser micro-welding is gradually accepted as a method of choice for metal joining. Furthermore, laser micro-welding can be readily automated using robotics and computer controlled motions. To have a successful, automated laser micro-welding system requires the combination of a reliable laser source; a good definition of how the welding spot addresses the work piece; a sound mechanical design to move the parts; and a user friendly software to facilitate the operation of the system. This paper describes the development of a turnkey, automated laser welding system for welding orthodontic brackets.
