Abstract

To realize the human-robot co-existence, the impacts of Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications (ELSI) on social robots have received wide attention from the public in recent years. However, the traditional law-centered approach is often questioned due to its incapability to overcome the AI Pacing Problem when it is applied to robot governance. In this paper, we want to propose an alternative design-centered approach for robot governance called “Ethical Design” via the case study of a humanoid companion robot “LOVOT” with a focus on its privacy-related communication in private spaces on the issue of consent in human-robot interaction.
