Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is a highly reactive chemical compound used primarily as a disinfectant and antimicrobial agent. In its gaseous or aqueous form, it effectively neutralizes bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other pathogens by oxidizing cellular components, making it significantly more potent than conventional chlorine-based disinfectants at lower concentrations. In robotics and AI, chlorine dioxide has gained particular relevance in autonomous disinfection systems, where mobile robots equipped with ClO2 spray or vapor generation mechanisms can sanitize hospitals, laboratories, and public spaces without requiring direct human presence. This application became especially prominent during the COVID-19 pandemic, driving development of smart sterilization platforms capable of navigating environments and delivering controlled, effective doses of the compound. Beyond mobile robotics, ClO2 is also used in automated laboratory incubators and pharmaceutical testing equipment, where robotic systems must maintain sterile conditions autonomously. Its importance lies in enabling safer, more efficient contamination control in settings where human exposure to pathogens or harsh chemicals must be minimized, directly supporting the deployment of autonomous systems in healthcare and life science environments.
