About
Tsutomu Kubo is a pioneering researcher in the field of robotic prosthetics, with a specific focus on advancing mobility solutions for individuals with hip-disarticulation amputations. His key research areas include the design and control of powered prosthetic limbs, particularly for high-level amputations where conventional passive devices offer limited functionality. Kubo’s major contributions are highlighted by his groundbreaking 2019 study, which represents the first reported application of a robotic prosthesis for hip-disarticulation amputees. This work, cited 25 times, demonstrated the feasibility of using robotic systems to restore more natural gait patterns, evaluated through non-amputee trials. Earlier, in 2009, he developed a powered hip-disarticulation prosthesis equipped with two geared electric motors and a swing phase controller, enabling semi-automatic walking by adjusting hip joint angles in response to the user’s limb motion.
