About

Takahiro Seki is a materials scientist whose research centers on the design of high-performance elastomers and polymer networks, drawing inspiration from biological structures. His most impactful contribution is the development of an optically transparent, high-toughness elastomer using a polyrotaxane cross-linker that acts as a “molecular pulley.” This innovative approach, detailed in his 2018 paper (192 citations), allows for exceptional energy dissipation and stretchability without sacrificing transparency. Seki further advanced the field by creating a filler composite elastomer inspired by the cornea, achieving a rare combination of high transparency and toughness through the homogeneous dispersion of silica particles (27 citations). His work also includes the spontaneous synthesis of thermoresponsive polymer networks with narrow molecular weight distributions (21 citations), enabling more uniform network structures. Most recently, he has explored structural coloration in transparent elastomers under elongation, opening new possibilities for wearable displays and soft robotics. Seki’s research elegantly bridges fundamental polymer chemistry with practical applications in medical materials and flexible electronics, establishing him as a leading innovator in tough, transparent elastomers.
