Shipeng Wang is pioneering the next generation of flexible optical sensors for healthcare, robotics, and human–machine interaction. His core research centers on optical micro/nanofiber technology, where he engineers the waveguiding properties of these hair-thin fibers to create multifunctional tactile sensors. Wang’s most impactful contribution is a single optical microfiber sensor capable of simultaneously measuring temperature and pressure—a breakthrough that earned 91 citations and addresses a critical need in prosthetics and wearable health monitors. He further advanced the field by developing an optical-nanofiber-enabled gesture-recognition wristband that, combined with machine learning, enables imperceptible and intuitive control for metaverse applications. His work also tackles distributed sensing, using deep learning to achieve high spatial resolution in narrow spaces with tapered optical fibers. With a recent comprehensive review on optical tactile sensors, Wang is shaping the roadmap for this emerging field.
