About

Samuel Shian is a leading figure in soft robotics, specializing in the mechanics and actuation of dielectric elastomers (DEs). His research focuses on harnessing these "artificial muscles" to create novel, compliant machines. Shian’s major contribution lies in demonstrating how the strategic placement of a few stiff fibers can fundamentally alter the behavior of DE actuators. His highly influential 2015 paper, "Dielectric Elastomer Based 'Grippers' for Soft Robotics" (473 citations), showed that patterned fibers can break the symmetry of lateral strain, enabling actuators to evolve into unique, pre-programmed shapes without the need for prestretch—a critical advance for practical grippers. He further applied this principle in "Use of aligned fibers to enhance the performance of dielectric elastomer inchworm robots" (47 citations), where fibers suppressed unwanted bulging to create a more efficient, proof-of-concept inchworm robot. By elegantly controlling deformation with minimal structural complexity, Shian’s work provides a powerful toolkit for designing next-generation soft robots that are simpler, more robust, and capable of complex, life-like motions.
