S. Mattoo is a prominent atmospheric scientist whose research has profoundly shaped our understanding of global aerosol systems through satellite remote sensing. Working primarily with NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instruments aboard the Terra and Aqua satellites, Mattoo has been a central contributor to the development and refinement of the widely used Dark Target aerosol retrieval algorithm, which enables quantitative measurement of aerosol optical depth and particle size properties over both land and ocean surfaces. Mattoo's most influential contribution, a 2005 comprehensive overview of the MODIS aerosol algorithm and its validation, has accumulated over 3,400 citations, reflecting its foundational role in the field.
