About
Ping Rao is a leading researcher in advanced soft materials, with a focus on hydrogels, shape-memory polymers, and bioinspired composites for applications in wet environments and soft robotics. Their most impactful contribution is the development of tough hydrogels with fast, strong, and reversible underwater adhesion, achieved through a multiscale design—a breakthrough cited over 370 times. This work addresses a critical challenge in tissue engineering, wound dressing, and underwater soft robotics by enabling robust bonding in wet conditions. Rao also pioneered mechanically robust, UV-curable shape-memory polymers for 4D printing, earning over 316 citations. These materials allow 3D-printed structures to change shape over time in response to stimuli, offering high stiffness and compatibility with digital light processing. More recently, Rao introduced saline-tolerant, fiber-reinforced gel-nacre composites that combine toughness and strength for soft actuators, demonstrating continued innovation in durable, responsive materials. Their work has significantly advanced the design of smart, adaptive materials for biomedical and robotic applications, establishing Rao as a key figure in the field of stimuli-responsive polymers and bioinspired engineering.
