About
Dr. Paolo Alessio is a pioneering urological surgeon and researcher at the forefront of integrating advanced digital technologies into prostate and kidney cancer surgery. His work centers on two transformative themes: optimizing salvage radical prostatectomy for recurrent prostate cancer and pioneering the use of extended reality—including the metaverse and artificial intelligence—for surgical planning. Dr. Alessio’s major contributions include demonstrating that robotic salvage radical prostatectomy offers superior functional outcomes and lower morbidity compared to open approaches, as evidenced by his highly cited 2019 multicenter study (91 citations). He has further advanced the field through the prospective, randomized RIDERS trial, which showed that AI-driven 3D augmented reality guidance improves surgical precision over cognitive MRI intervention. Most recently, he has been a trailblazer in metaverse surgical planning, creating immersive 3D virtual models for minimally invasive partial nephrectomy and robotic prostatectomy. With over 180 cumulative citations, Dr. Alessio’s work is shaping the future of precision surgery, making complex procedures safer and more effective for patients worldwide.
