About
Moises Di Sante is pioneering the convergence of biomaterials engineering and high-throughput screening (HTS) to transform preclinical drug testing. His research centers on developing physiologically relevant cell culture platforms that bridge the gap between traditional plastic/glass substrates and complex organoids or organs-on-chip. Di Sante’s major contribution is the creation of HYDRA—a robotic liquid handling automation system for fabricating cell culture hydrogels directly into HTS plates. This innovation solves the critical scalability bottleneck: while organoids offer superior biomimicry, they cannot be deployed in early-stage drug discovery. HYDRA enables the production of hydrogel-coated wells with uniform, meniscus-free surfaces, allowing for reproducible, high-volume drug testing in a more tissue-like environment. His work directly addresses the poor predictive power of conventional 2D cultures, which often lead to costly late-stage drug failures. Though early in his career, his foundational papers (each with 2 citations) establish a clear trajectory toward automated, biomimetic HTS. Di Sante’s approach promises to make drug development faster, cheaper, and more clinically relevant by integrating materials science, robotics, and cell biology into a scalable platform.
