Mohamadreza Ahmadi is pioneering the field of risk-aware autonomy, developing rigorous mathematical frameworks to ensure safety for robots and autonomous systems operating under stochastic uncertainty. His core research integrates control theory, formal methods, and risk measures—particularly Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR)—to create safety-critical systems that go beyond traditional mean-based guarantees. Ahmadi’s landmark work on risk control barrier functions (RCBFs) and CVaR barrier functions provides provable safety certificates for nonlinear systems facing random disturbances, with direct applications to bipedal robot locomotion. His highly cited 2021 paper (48 citations) on risk-averse control via CVaR barrier functions established a new paradigm for enforcing safety in the presence of tail risks. Ahmadi has also made significant contributions to stochastic control under temporal logic specifications, developing methods for partially observable Markov decision processes (POMDPs) and multi-agent systems.
