Keith Shortridge is a pioneering instrumental astronomer whose career has been defined by building the complex robotic systems that power modern multi-object spectroscopy. His most celebrated contribution is the 2dF (Two-degree Field) facility at the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT), a revolutionary instrument that uses a sophisticated robot to independently position up to 400 optical fibres across a 2° field of view. The 2dF paper alone has garnered over 350 citations, a testament to its transformative impact on large-scale galaxy surveys. Building on this legacy, Shortridge was instrumental in the development and integration of the High Efficiency and Resolution Multi-Element Spectrograph (HERMES), a facility-class instrument designed for the GALAH Galactic Archaeology Survey.
