Luke Gers is an instrumental astronomer whose work has been pivotal in advancing large-scale spectroscopic surveys for Galactic and extragalactic science. His primary research areas include the design, construction, and commissioning of high-multiplex optical spectrographs and fibre-positioning systems. Gers is best known for his central role in developing the HERMES spectrograph for the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT), a facility-class instrument that powers the GALAH survey—the first major effort to unravel galaxy formation and evolution by chemically mapping our own Milky Way.
