About

Karen Harrison‐Phipps is a pioneering thoracic surgeon whose work bridges the cutting-edge of robotic surgery and immunotherapy in lung cancer care. Her research centers on two transformative areas: integrating robotic surgery simulation into surgical training and advancing salvage pulmonary resection for advanced-stage lung cancer. In her highly cited 2021 study (23 citations), she qualitatively analyzed the literature to address the critical gap between robotic simulation and core surgical training, advocating for its formal inclusion in curricula to enhance skill acquisition and patient safety. This work has positioned her as a key voice in surgical education reform. Concurrently, her 2021 case series (17 citations) explored the uncharted territory of salvage pulmonary resection in stages IIIb–IV lung cancer following immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy. By documenting nine patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer who underwent resection, she provided crucial early evidence that surgery can be safely and effectively performed after immunotherapy, challenging conventional treatment paradigms. Harrison‐Phipps’s contributions are reshaping both how surgeons are trained and how advanced lung cancer is managed, demonstrating a rare ability to drive innovation from the operating room to the curriculum.
