About
Hiromasa Yamashita has pioneered the development of miniature, robotic surgical tools for minimally invasive fetal interventions. His research focuses on creating high-precision mechatronic systems to treat life-threatening prenatal conditions, dramatically reducing the risks associated with open fetal surgery. His most influential work, the "Miniature bending manipulator for fetoscopic intrauterine laser therapy to treat twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome" (2007, 32 citations), introduced a novel, articulated instrument that allows surgeons to navigate the complex intrauterine environment with unprecedented dexterity. This device directly addressed a critical need in fetoscopy, enabling precise laser ablation of abnormal blood vessels. Yamashita further advanced the field by exploring non-invasive alternatives, as demonstrated in his work on a "HIFU Positioning Robot for Less-Invasive Fetal Treatment" (2013). This system was designed to treat sacrococcygeal teratoma using High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), offering a promising, incision-free alternative to highly invasive tumor resection.
