About
Gerd Dobmann is a leading figure in non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and materials characterization, with a career dedicated to extending the safe service life of critical infrastructure. His research focuses on the intersection of micromagnetic techniques and automated robotic systems to assess structural integrity. A cornerstone of his work is the use of micromagnetic NDT to predict mechanical properties in irradiated nuclear pressure-vessel steel, a contribution cited 17 times for its role in advancing safety protocols for aging nuclear assets. Dobmann has also been instrumental in addressing the global challenge of ageing bridge infrastructure, developing automated NDE systems to detect chloride-induced corrosion in reinforced concrete. His most notable achievement is the BETOSCAN project, an instrumented mobile robot system for diagnosing reinforced concrete floors in parking garages and bridge decks. This innovation, detailed in multiple publications, automates the detection of corrosion risks, moving beyond manual inspection to provide comprehensive, quantifiable data. With a career spanning nuclear safety to civil engineering, Dobmann’s work demonstrates how advanced NDT can transform infrastructure maintenance, making him a key contributor to both materials science and practical asset management.
