About

Francesca Cecchi is an Italian researcher whose work bridges robotics, cognitive development, and rehabilitation engineering, with particular emphasis on how technology can enhance human learning and wellbeing. She is best known for pioneering the application of Educational Robotics (ER) as a tool for strengthening Executive Functions in children — the higher-order cognitive processes essential for learning, planning, and self-regulation. Her landmark 2017 pilot study, now cited over 200 times, demonstrated that robot programming activities could meaningfully improve executive functioning in preschool children, sparking a wave of follow-up research. Cecchi has extended these findings to children with special needs, including those with Down Syndrome, showing that ER offers inclusive benefits across diverse neurodevelopmental profiles. Her 2020 randomized controlled trial further validated ER's cognitive benefits in typically developing five- and six-year-olds. Beyond cognitive robotics, Cecchi has made notable contributions to wearable sensing technology, developing innovative textile-based pressure and strain sensors with applications in rehabilitation monitoring and biomechanics. With nearly 470 total citations across her most prominent works, her research consistently connects engineering innovation to real-world human impact, positioning her as a distinctive voice at the intersection of robotics, education, and healthcare.
