About
Dr. D. Meikle is a leading head and neck surgeon whose research has fundamentally advanced the use of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for oropharyngeal cancer. Their work focuses on three critical areas: diagnosing cancers of unknown primary, refining TORS for recurrent disease, and understanding swallowing recovery after surgery. Dr. Meikle’s landmark 2017 study on TORS-assisted tongue base mucosectomy (50 citations) established a new standard for identifying hidden head and neck cancers, while their 2017 investigation into TORS for residual and recurrent tumors (41 citations) provided crucial evidence for expanding robotic surgery to challenging salvage cases. Notably, their 2016 prospective study (29 citations) demonstrated that pre-treatment swallowing measures can predict recovery at six weeks post-TORS, directly improving patient counseling and rehabilitation planning. As part of the first UK TORS practice, Dr. Meikle’s large 2021 single-centre series (15 citations) confirmed excellent oncological outcomes for primary TORS in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Their work has been instrumental in establishing TORS as a safe, effective alternative to traditional open surgery, reducing morbidity while maintaining cancer control.
